Each machine was initially designed for a particular type of work, but many can be modified with attachments to perform other functions. Heavy equipment operators must know the capabilities and limitations of the machine being operated. Operators also must be familiar with the various attachments that can be used with any given machine and know how to use them. With such levels of knowledge, the equipment operator will have many opportunities for advancement.

Learning Objective 3 – Successful completion of this module prepares trainees to: Explain hydraulic systems and their components.

  • Explain hydraulic system fundamentals.
  • Identify and describe the equipment and components used in hydraulic systems.

Performance Tasks

  • Identify the various types of heavy equipment and explain their uses.
  • Identify the basic parts of each type of equipment and explain the differences in models among the types of equipment.
